RACHEL ON MS NOW'S BREAKNIG IRAN COVERAGE |
In case you were not able to watch MS NOW's immediate breaking coverage of Donald Trump's attack on Iran, Rachel hosted the 1pm hour. Highlights of that coverage are linked to the MS NOW YouTube account below, including Rachel's opening statement. |
WHAT'S ON RACHEL'S BLUESKY RADAR? |
- "'If the government may simply seize someone without due process, there is no check on its ability to seize anyone,' the judge wrote..."
(Politico)
- "A Minnesota federal judge has ordered the state's top federal prosecutor and officials with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to appear in his courtroom Tuesday to explain why they should not be held in civil or criminal contempt for what he alleges are repeated court violations.
U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Bryan's order cites "numerous unlawful" failures by the U.S. government to return belongings to immigrants ordered released from detention, including their cash, cellphones, jewelry, driver's licenses, passports and more.
Bryan summoned Minnesota's U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen, along with the head of the U.S. Attorney's Office's civil division and a representative from ICE to U.S. District Court in St. Paul on March 3 to "show cause why they should not be held in civil or criminal contempt."" (The Minnesota Star Tribune)
- "Over the past few weeks we've learned that not only is she not doing her job, she's embroiling the department in scandal and possible criminal activity. It's frankly embarrassing..."

- 911 calls capture kids burning with fever, struggling to breathe at ICE detention center — EMS crews were called to the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas at least 11 times since September for children in medical distress, records show.

- "Aside from the internment camps used to incarcerate Japanese Americans in the 1940s, such facilities have no precedent in American history..."
US Conference of Catholic Bishops statement on Trump's new mass prison camps.
Full statement at the link:
"The thought of holding thousands of families in massive warehouses should challenge the conscience of every American. Whatever their immigration status, these are human beings created in the image and likeness of God, and this is a moral inflection point for our country. We implore the Administration and Congress to lead with right reason, abandon this misuse of taxpayer funds, and to instead pursue a more just approach to immigration enforcement that truly respects human dignity, the sanctity of families, and religious liberty." (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops)
- "On Feb. 9, the first day of the budget session, Teton County GOP State Committeewoman Rebecca Bextel handed out campaign checks to four lawmakers on the House floor. The photographed exchange led to political and ethical scrutiny, legislative rule changes, an executive order and both a House and criminal investigation.
But it didn't spur any action by the Wyoming GOP." (WyoFile)
- "Cut the utilities, condemn the building, demo it, take it under eminent domain, whatever you can do. Make it impossible for them to use our neighborhood for a concentration camp," he said.
"This will not be solved by a harshly worded letter or resolution. We need action."
Community members, public officials push back against ICE expansion into metro Detroit (WDET)
- "For all of these reasons, the City of Romulus objects to the existence of an ICE Detention Center and respectfully requests that an ICE Detention Center not be located in the City..."
(Fox 2 Detroit)
- "ROMULUS, MI - U.S. Sens. Elissa Slotkin and Gary Peters are calling on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to reverse plans to use a commercial warehouse in Romulus as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility, raising concerns about safety, zoning and economic impact.
In a letter sent this week to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, the Michigan Democrats questioned the department's recent acquisition of the Southeast Michigan property and said local officials were not notified before the purchase." (MLive)
- Michigan AG calls on ICE to halt plans for Romulus detention center

- "Her release follows months of advocacy from community members and political leaders of both parties.
Yu has operated her two West Valley restaurants for years, building a reputation for greeting customers with humor and kindness. She has no criminal record."
West Valley sushi shop owner released from ICE detention after eight months (12News)
- "Trump himself has vehemently maintained that the U.S. "obliterated" Iran's nuclear program with airstrikes this past summer. The International Atomic Energy Agency has said there is no evidence Iran has restarted its uranium enrichment program following those strikes or that it has an active bomb-building plan. In an assessment last year, the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency cited no indication that Iran was embarking on development of an intercontinental ballistic missile. If it decided to do so, the DIA said, it would take a decade to produce."
(The Washington Post)
- "The attack came despite US intelligence assessments that Iran was unlikely to pose an immediate threat to the US mainland within the next decade."
So why do it?
"A weeks-long lobbying effort by Israel and Saudi Arabia..."
Ah. Not just weak, but cheap, too. (Rachel shares the Washington Post)

- Resign.
Resign. Resign.
Have some basic decency: resign.
US military used laser to take down Border Protection drone, lawmakers say (Rachel shares the Associated Press)
- "Just like the Forever Wars, this fiasco is also birthing its own captive constituencies... from contractors supplying it to MAGA-adjacent young (and not so young) men signing up for ICE, which Ganz describes as 'an employment program for the Trumpenproletarian mob."
... "It's the transformation of DHS from an entity that protected the homeland from external threats to one increasingly policing American society," Donald Moynihan, author of an excellent Substack on state capacity, tells me. With this ramped-up stockpiling, Moynihan says, the endgame will be "filling those warehouses with people and using those guns and that technology to control American cities."
The war on terror also teaches us that expanding bureaucracies like these only grow harder to control over time. "Trump is building up a well-funded, poorly trained paramilitary force that could easily take on a life of its own," says Georgetown national security law expert Rosa Brooks. "Once you have a massive moneymaking machine ginned up, it's hard to reverse course and turn off the spigot." (The New Republic)
- NEW! From the same clueless Republicans who brought you doubling premiums: $31,000 deductibles.
Only an out of touch billionaire would think that counts as affordable. (Senator Patty Murray shares the New York Times)
- There are nearly 2,000 events on the No Kings Day map in all 50 states (and 10 countries). March 28 will be the largest protest in American history. Find your local event or plan a protest in your area:
