July 2, 2025 Ms. Ann Theresa O'Toole 907 W Meadowmere Ln Austin, Texas 78758-5823 Dear Ann, The Big Ugly Bill passed the House initially by one vote. An amended version passed the Senate yesterday only after Vice President Vance broke a tie vote. The Senate accomplished a near impossible task – they made the ugly House bill even uglier. I voted against the bill before and continue working vigorously against it. Early this morning at 7, I voiced my strong concerns on CNN, which you can watch here. Families already facing higher costs, struggling to make ends meet, will now face an even more difficult struggle. The number of American citizens denied access to a family physician has now soared to 17 million. Even Republican Senator Thom Tillis said, "It is inescapable this bill will betray the promise Donald Trump made." And the price of electricity expected to increase by 17% because of fanatical Republican opposition to wind and solar energy. It cruelly contains the largest cut to nutritional assistance in American history, impacting 5 million families. On fiscal responsibility, the independent, conservative Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget condemns the Senate for "explod[ing] our debt" spiking it "to new record highs, and accelerat[ing] the insolvency of Social Security and Medicare." If "beauty is in the eye of the beholder," the only beauty in this ugly bill belongs to the billionaires beholden to Trump. It takes from those with less to give to those with the most, lining the pockets of the superrich with millions in new tax giveaways. Under this Republican bill, those at the top get 390 times the benefits available for Americans earning $50,000 or less. Along with other Texas Democrats, I participated in a press conference that highlighted how Texas families would be impacted. Unless even four House Republicans are willing to stand up to Trump, this travesty will become law. Their decision may turn on how much they hear from those who live in their districts. Republicans who yield to Trump's intimidation on this Big Ugly Bill rather than defending their neighbors' access to health care, food assistance, and more must be held accountable. So you can more easily follow my work, I forward occasional email updates on my ongoing work in Congress regarding important issues, such as this lawless GOP effort to undermine our democracy.
