On Christmas Eve, President Joe Biden signed 50 new bills into law, ranging from environmental conservation efforts and child abuse prevention measures to a bill officially naming the bald eagle the county's national bird. It was a busy week for the president — just a few days earlier, Biden commuted the death sentences of 37 inmates, leaving only three people on federal death row.
The House Ethics Committee finally released a much-anticipated report on its investigation into former Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz on Monday. The committee found "substantial evidence" Gaetz had purchased and used illegal drugs and paid multiple women for sex while in Congress, including a teenager.
On Friday evening, President-elect Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court to push pause on a law that could ban TikTok nationwide starting Jan. 19 if Chinese owner ByteDance doesn't sell the app to an American company. Trump asked the justices to stay the upcoming deadline so his administration could "pursue a negotiated resolution."
Abroad, dozens were killed on Wednesday after an Azerbaijan Airlines flight carrying 67 people crashed in Kazakhstan en route to Russia. Meanwhile in South Korea, the parliament impeached acting President Han Duck-soo on Friday, two weeks after the county's former leader was ousted over a short-lived imposition of martial law. And over the weekend, 179 people were killed after a plane crashed while landing at South Korea's Muan International Airport.
And on Christmas Day, millions tuned in to watch Beyoncé's mesmerizing Houston Texans-Baltimore Ravens halftime show, setting a high bar for February's Super Bowl.
