Vice President Kamala Harris spent her week on various television screens, radio waves and podcast streams as part of a media blitz rounding into the final stretch before Election Day. Her appearances included "The Howard Stern Show," "The View," "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" and the podcast "Call Her Daddy." Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, also sat down for an interview on "60 Minutes." Former President Donald Trump, who was also scheduled for a "60 Minutes" interview, backed out after he learned he would be fact-checked.
Harris' surrogate supremacy in the campaign is also on display in these final weeks, with two former Democratic presidents hitting the trail on her behalf. On Thursday, former President Barack Obama rallied for Harris-Walz in Pittsburgh, where he made a pitch directly to American men. And former President Bill Clinton will campaign for Harris in Georgia and North Carolina this week. Trump held rallies of his own on Wednesday in Pennsylvania, where he ramped up personal attacks on his opponent.
There's renewed scrutiny on Trump's relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin after new reporting from journalist Bob Woodward. Trump has spoken with Putin as many as seven times since leaving office, including as recently as this year, according to Woodward's new book. Woodward also reported that Trump sent Covid testing devices to Putin at the height of the 2020 pandemic — a claim that the Kremlin backed up.
The Supreme Court kicked off the first week of its new term, during which it is set to hear cases involving transgender rights, "ghost guns" and other hot-button issues. So far the majority-conservative court has turned away a Biden administration appeal to protect emergency abortion care in Texas and denied a Pennsylvania GOP challenge to Biden's voter registration effort.
Across Florida, people continue to recover from Hurricane Milton. The storm made landfall Wednesday night as a Category 3 hurricane, dumping over 1.5 feet of rain in the Tampa Bay area. At least 17 people have been confirmed dead in the storm's aftermath, including at least five from the tornadoes on the state's east coast. The storm caused an estimated $50 billion in damage, President Joe Biden said Friday. Earlier in the week, Biden sharply criticized Trump and other Republicans for spreading disinformation about hurricanes Milton and Helene, telling Trump to "get a life."
