It's now been three weeks since President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race and Vice President Kamala Harris jumped in. After announcing Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate at a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday, Harris and Walz embarked on a swing state tour last week that included stops in Michigan, Georgia and Arizona. To liberals, Walz is developing a reputation as "America's dad"; to conservatives, he's "Tampon Tim," whom they are trying to tar with dubious claims of "stolen valor." Harris currently leads former President Donald Trump by six points in new polling (a lead that's within the survey's margin of error).
For their first debate, Harris and Trump have both agreed to a September 10 ABC News showdown. Trump, who said he would only agree to a September 4 debate on Fox News with his new rules, said he also agreed to debates hosted by Fox and NBC. Trump's running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, dodged questions from reporters this week as to whether he'll debate Walz, and offered to debate Harris. Walz said he "can't wait" to debate Vance.
On the Trump legal front, Judge Tanya Chutkan on Friday granted special counsel Jack Smith's request for a deadline extension to file a joint status report in Donald Trump's federal election interference case. And Jenna Ellis, a key member of Trump's post-defeat legal team, has agreed to cooperate with Arizona prosecutors in that state's fake electors case.
The 2024 Olympics are coming to a close in Paris. The closing ceremony is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. ET this afternoon, with performances expected from Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg and other stars. And on the final day, the International Olympic Committee said that U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles must return her bronze medal in the floor exercise, upholding findings that a coach's protest that got her on the podium shouldn't have been allowed.
