The Supreme Court issued several highly anticipated rulings this week, including temporarily allowing Idaho to resume providing abortions in medical emergencies. The court, however, sidestepped making a decision as to whether the state's strict abortion law conflicts with a federal law that requires emergency room care for patients. The court also overturned the decades-old Chevron decision, weakening the power of federal regulators, and ruled on a pivotal Jan. 6-related case that could have implications for Donald Trump's federal election interference case. But more directly consequential for that case, the justices will close out their term on Monday with a long-awaited decision on Trump's presidential immunity claim.
Meanwhile, Judge Aileen Cannon's behavior in Trump's classified documents case has raised more concerns about her impartiality as she wasted more time with extraneous hearings over the constitutionality of Jack Smith's appointment as special counsel.
At this week's first presidential debate, hosted by CNN, the former president's avalanche of lies was overshadowed by Joe Biden's performance, which some Democrats have described as disappointing, at best, and disqualifying, at worst. After a backlash over his alarmingly weak performance, the president worked to refute the criticism on Friday with a strong, energized performance on the campaign trail.
Tuesday's primaries saw three Trump-endorsed candidates lose high-profile races. And on the Democratic side, Rep. Jamaal Bowman lost his New York primary race against an AIPAC-funded candidate, George Latimer, after a hard-fought campaign that may provide a revealing clue for progressive candidates being targeted in primaries.
