On the heels of former President Donald Trump's conviction, this week saw a barrage of consequences for Trump allies and far-right figures. Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones filed to liquidate his assets to pay off more than a billion dollars he owes to families of Sandy Hook shooting victims. Former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows pleaded not guilty in Arizona this week for his alleged role in attempting to overturn the 2020 election. He, along with 17 others, are charged with nine felony counts related to the so-called fake electors scheme. And Trump ally Steve Bannon was ordered to report to prison on July 1 — a significant loss for Trump, who loses an influential voice during the final stretch of the 2024 campaign.
With slightly more than two weeks until they face off in their first presidential debate, Joe Biden and Donald Trump have doubled down on their campaign messaging strategies. During remarks in Normandy to honor the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Biden called for unity and warned of threats to democracy. The president also passed an "emergency" executive action to limit the number of asylum seekers accepted at the border, a move that has sparked backlash among many Democrats. Meanwhile, former President Trump vowed revenge on the judicial system and his perceived political enemies after his guilty verdict, enlisting the help of far-right figures like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Speaker Mike Johnson in his attack on the rule of law.
Prosecutors this week rested their case in the federal gun trial of Hunter Biden. Lawyers for the president's son began laying out their defense on Friday, before the jury was dismissed for the weekend. They are expected to call their final witness next week.
