After a turbulent week in the courtroom, a jury determined that former President Donald Trump must pay writer E. Jean Carroll over $83 million in damages for repeatedly defaming her. The trial's outcome, which will likely be appealed, could have a major effect on Trump's assets and pose even more problems for him politically. Elsewhere, former Trump White House adviser Peter Navarro was sentenced to four months of incarceration for contempt of Congress, and ordered to pay a $9,500 fine after refusing to comply with a House Jan. 6 committee subpoena.
Despite his worsening legal woes, Trump scored a key victory in the New Hampshire Republican primary on Tuesday night, earning over 54% of the vote to former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley's 43%. While Haley has vowed to fight on, Trump's win secured his status as the presumptive Republican nominee, making a Trump-Biden rematch in the general election feel increasingly inevitable.
Meanwhile, Texas's governor is refusing to back down from his state's cruel anti-immigration initiative Operation Lone Star. Gov. Greg Abbott is brazenly flouting a new Supreme Court ruling that allows the Biden administration to remove razor wire installed by the Texas National Guard along the border to deter migrants. Capping off the week, on Friday, the International Court of Justice warned Israel to prevent genocidal acts against Palestinians, but declined to order an immediate cease-fire.
