The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice John Roberts, ruled Thursday that the Voting Rights Act still acts as a guard against racial gerrymandering in this country, striking down Republican-drawn congressional districts in Alabama that civil rights activists say discriminated against Black voters. On Thursday night, Donald Trump took to Truth Social to announce his indictment in special counsel Jack Smith's classified documents probe — marking the first federal charges ever against a U.S. president — and adding that he has been summoned to appear in Miami federal court Tuesday. The full indictment was unsealed the next day, revealing 37 counts against Trump, including retention of national defense information under the Espionage Act, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and withholding a government document or record. On the same day, two of Trump's defense lawyers resigned from his defense team and special counsel Jack Smith spoke publicly about the charges for the first time, saying his office will seek a "speedy trial" and emphasizing the importance of the rule of law.
