In a sane world, the House Jan. 6 committee's final report would be a disaster for congressional Republicans, Hayes Brown writes.

Following a number of much-anticipated criminal referrals to the Justice Department from the Jan. 6 committee in its final hearing, including Donald Trump and four GOP House members, one might think congressional Republicans would be shaking in their boots — but that's not exactly what we're seeing, according to Hayes Brown. This feels particularly true for Kevin McCarthy, who Brown predicts will be allowed to continue his bid for speaker of the House despite implications in the 2021 insurrection. For a number of reasons, including the political makeup of the ethics committee responsible for criminal referrals and a historical lack of transparency, there's little reason we should expect to see McCarthy suffer any real consequences. "The Constitution that Republicans profess to love was written at a time when it was assumed that members of Congress would rather expel a stain on the body's honor than give him quarter," Brown writes. But in 2022, "It feels like a waste of breath to appeal to any shame they have left in that regard." Read Hayes Brown's full analysis in your Tuesday MSNBC Daily. |
