The former president may be down, but he can still hold Republicans hostage.

What if Donald Trump doesn't go quietly? |
Herschel Walker's defeat in this week's Georgia Senate runoff was the capstone on a very bad midterm for Republicans. "What happened to the Republican Party is no mystery," writes Noah Rothman. "The GOP knows it has a Trump problem." But knowing the problem and fixing it are two different things — especially when "Trump can convince his fellow Republicans that the GOP will suffer even worse losses if they abandon him."
Already, says Rothman, Trump's acolytes are pushing the fiction that the party establishment, not Trump, is the problem. The reality, of course, is that a Trumpified GOP is worse "for both party and country." But unless more Republican voters reject self-destruction in 2024, the burden of rescuing the party falls to its leaders. That just leaves one question for Republicans, Rothman concludes, "Who will put their careers on the line to stop that from happening?"
