Earlier this week, President Joe Biden took part in one of the goofiest traditions in American politics: the "Pardoning of the National Turkey." The ceremony is "one of the the fluffier events on the presidential agenda, the ones that act as unifiers and ways to talk about the nation's values," Hayes Brown writes. "And, yes, a chance to toss off as many Thanksgiving-themed puns as possible."
But the symbolic pardon's history is a lot shorter than you might expect, Brown writes. And there's at least one way to add some substance to the affair and really highlight the spirit of Thanksgiving.
