Immunizing witnesses suggests Merrick Garland is now focusing on hauling in his catch.

Few people knew Kash Patel's name six months ago. But today, the Donald Trump adviser suddenly finds himself at the center of a new and very intriguing DOJ investigation development. The Justice Department has officially granted Patel immunity, meaning he can be compelled to testify without risk of criminal prosecution. And why would the DOJ do that? That's where it gets very interesting, writes Barbara McQuade. "Giving up the prosecution of Patel and other witnesses who may have engaged in wrongdoing all but eliminates the ability to hold them accountable under the criminal law," notes McQuade. "That's not a decision any prosecutor takes lightly. And it suggests DOJ has assessed that sacrificing their convictions is necessary to reel in a more egregious offender."
