For transgender Americans, voting is often a nightmare of awkward and invasive explanations, or even outright hostility.

As people across the country prepare to head to the midterm polls, one group faces a unique and complex array of hurdles. Trans people have been targeted by hundreds of conservative bills that restrict their rights in 2022 alone — including criminalizing providing gender-affirming care for minors. This makes the midterm voting results this year more important than ever. But an increasing number of strict voter ID laws passed in many red states over the past decade means that "hundreds of thousands of trans people could find themselves disenfranchised at the ballot box this year," writes Katelyn Burns. Combine that with reports of a spate of anti-trans radio ads just ahed of Election Day and a heightened threat of violence in the form of far-right "poll watchers" for a group already facing an increasing threat of physical harm, and trans people are being squeezed into what feels like an impossible situation. "As the most important election in U.S. transgender history looms on the horizon," Burns writes, "I just hope each of us gets our voices heard Tuesday — and counted."
