A looming existential threat to democratic norms resonates far less with American voters than immediate issues like inflation, immigration and reproductive rights.

After watching months of hearings on the Jan. 6 insurrection, critics on the left claim it's a missed opportunity that one of the biggest threats to our nation's democracy is not front and center of Democratic midterm election campaigns. But there's a very logical reason for that, Zeeshan Aleem writes. Namely, that a looming existential threat to democratic norms resonates far less with American voters than immediate issues like inflation, immigration and reproductive rights. And Democrats are demonstrating they understand that.
"Democrats should certainly communicate about the Republican threat to democracy, and of course the issue will immediately become salient again if Trump opts to run for president yet again," Aleem writes. "But given what current polling and historical trends tell us about voter behavior, they're better off listening to where the electorate is at right now."
