"Trump has broken new ground by facing multiple criminal investigations," Steve Benen writes.

Attorney General Merrick Garland on Friday announced the appointment of John L. Smith, known as Jack Smith, as special prosecutor looking into classified documents found at former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago home, as well as Trump's role in the Jan. 6 insurrection. "Other American presidents have faced criminal investigations," Steve Benen notes, "but Trump has broken new ground by facing multiple criminal investigations." "Though many anticipated such an appointment," Benen writes, "the move is not without controversy. Justice Department officials have spent months — in the Jan. 6 matter, more than a year — examining the details of Trump's alleged misdeeds." While Garland's desire for the prosecution to be seen as independent is understandable, Benen argues, "in practice, there's no reason to believe Trump and his followers will be impressed."
